When Dr. Jenkins arrived at Fort Jackson, South Carolina for basic training, he was barely 18. Within days he was thrust into the platoon leader position, overseeing 300 men. That experience was transformational for him and solidified his belief that his military service in the United States Army was one of the greatest experiences of his professional life.
As a military veteran, the leadership insights that have significantly shaped his presidency include an unwavering emphasis on mission-driven decision-making, cultivating a culture of accountability and collaboration, leading by example, embracing change, prioritizing clear, effective communication, and investing in the success of his team—comprising administration, students, faculty, and staff—while maintaining resilience in an ever-challenging environment.

Seek out mentors and do not be afraid to try new experiences. He often tells his students that fear and failure are not the opposite of success; rather, they are essential ingredients of it.
