Stanford Graduation Protest Erupts as Students Walk Out During Sundar Pichai’s Commencement Address

Stanford Graduation Protest Erupts as Students Walk Out During Sundar Pichai’s Commencement Address

What was intended to be a celebratory milestone for thousands of Stanford University graduates became a flashpoint for political activism on Sunday when hundreds of students staged a walkout during Sundar Pichai’s address, protesting Google’s ties to Israel and U.S. government agencies.

As the Google and Alphabet CEO took the stage at Stanford Stadium, groups of graduating students rose from their seats carrying Palestinian flags, blowing whistles, and chanting “Free Palestine.” Boos and cries of “Shame on you” echoed through sections of the crowd as protesters filed out of the ceremony in a demonstration that had been organized weeks in advance by pro-Palestinian student groups.

The protest transformed one of Stanford’s most high-profile commencement ceremonies in recent years into a visible display of the tensions surrounding the role of major technology companies in global conflicts and government operations. Organizers said the action was directed at Google’s involvement in Project Nimbus, a $1.2 billion cloud-computing and artificial intelligence contract awarded jointly to Google and Amazon by the Israeli government. Critics of the project argue that the technology could support Israeli government and military activities, a claim that has fueled protests among students and some tech workers for several years.

Student activists also pointed to Google’s contracts with U.S. agencies, including Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), as part of their broader criticism of the company’s business relationships. Protest organizers described the walkout as an effort to challenge what they view as corporate complicity in surveillance and military systems.

The demonstration came amid a continuing wave of campus activism linked to the war in Gaza. Stanford has been a focal point for protests, sit-ins, and other actions since the conflict intensified, with students demanding greater institutional accountability and divestment from companies they believe contribute to the crisis. Sunday’s walkout was the latest chapter in that movement and one of the most visible disruptions at a university commencement ceremony this year.

Pichai, a Stanford alumnus who earned a master’s degree from the university in 1995, continued speaking despite the disruption. He largely avoided discussing artificial intelligence, a notable decision given Google’s central role in the AI industry and growing concerns among graduates about the technology’s impact on jobs and society. Instead, he focused on personal experiences, resilience, and optimism, encouraging graduates to approach uncertainty with confidence and purpose.

“Choose optimism,” Pichai told the graduating class, urging students not to be defined by the challenges of the moment but by how they respond to them. He reflected on his own journey from India to Silicon Valley and described how difficult choices and unexpected opportunities shaped his career.

Observers noted that the Google chief executive appeared determined to keep the focus on the graduates rather than the controversy unfolding around him. Unlike other technology leaders who have recently faced criticism for emphasizing AI during commencement speeches, Pichai steered clear of detailed discussions about the technology. Some analysts viewed the approach as a deliberate effort to avoid another contentious debate at a time when many young professionals remain anxious about automation, layoffs, and the changing job market.
