5 Industries Struggling Due to AI-Driven Chip Shortages

Increases in the use of artificial intelligence is not only causing changes in the economics of the entire world, but they are also having an impact on a great number of other enterprises. Semiconductor manufacturers are concentrating their efforts on the production of high-performance devices such as graphics processing units (GPUs) and artificial intelligence accelerators as the demand for technology driven by artificial intelligence (AI) continues to grow. The fact that there are fewer chips available for other firms as a result of this development makes it difficult for some of those enterprises to continue producing items and to meet the demand for them. The absence of processors that are powered by artificial intelligence has had a significant impact on these five businesses.

The consumer electronics sector has been the most affected. A lot of modern devices need semiconductors to work well. Smartphones, tablets, computers, and smart home devices are all part of this. Investments in AI technology are growing faster than investments in parts used in consumer electronics.  

So, new products have been coming out later, they are harder to get, and store prices have gone up because of this mismatch. When makers can’t get their hands on chips, they often have to rethink their products or make them less useful. Customers will have fewer choices and have to wait longer for famous electronics. When demand is high, like during the holidays, supply problems are much clearer, making the problem a lot harder to solve.

  1. Automotive Industry

Electronic semiconductors are used in many parts of modern cars to do many different jobs, such as running the engine and helping the driver with difficult systems. As more electric cars and electric cars that drive themselves come out, the automotive business has had a huge rise in the need for microchip chips.

But automobiles have a tougher time getting electronics because AI requires them. Because of this, businesses have had to close for a period, production has slowed down, and there are fewer automobiles being created. A lot of automobile companies have had to focus on high-end models or take away some features from lesser models since they don’t have enough chips. Because of this, new ideas would not go ahead as rapidly, and automobiles might cost more in the long term.

The healthcare sector relies heavily on semiconductor technology for medical devices such as imaging systems, diagnostic tools, and equipment for monitoring patients. In this field, a lack of chips might have big effects since delays in production can impair patient care and the delivery of healthcare.

AI applications in healthcare, like advanced diagnostics and predictive analytics, are driving up the demand for high-performance chips. Unfortunately, this surge often comes at the cost of more traditional medical devices. Consequently, hospitals and healthcare providers might encounter equipment shortages or delays in upgrading essential systems, which could ultimately impact efficiency and patient outcomes

Telecommunications companies rely heavily on semiconductors to create and sustain their network infrastructure, which includes everything from 5G equipment to routers and data transmission systems. As the rollout of next-generation networks accelerates, the demand for chips has surged, and the ongoing AI boom is only intensifying that pressure.

With the semiconductor supply being funnelled into AI data centres and cloud computing, telecom companies are finding it tough to get the components they need for expanding their networks. This situation can really slow down the rollout of faster and more reliable communication networks, especially in developing areas. As a result, this delay can have a negative effect on digital connectivity and economic growth.

  1. Industrial Manufacturing Sector

Industrial manufacturing, especially with the rise of automation and robotics, heavily depends on semiconductors to drive machinery and manage control systems. As industries embrace smart manufacturing and the concept of Industry 4.0, the need for chips is only set to increase.

The focus on AI hardware has really put a strain on the availability of chips for industrial use. This means manufacturers might run into production delays, face rising costs, and struggle to keep their operations running smoothly. Smaller companies, in particular, are finding it tough to get the components they need, which can seriously affect their ability to compete in the global market.

To tackle these issues, we need a more balanced strategy for chip production, along with increased investment in semiconductor manufacturing and a stronger, more resilient supply chain. Until we get there, the effects of AI-related chip shortages will keep reverberating throughout the global economy.
